ALTHOUGH I studied history in great depth at school and university it was not until I visited the First World War battlefields and cemeteries in Belgium with school parties in the Eighties that I really understood the horror of war and the resulting casualties.

We always attended the ceremony of The Last Post at the Menin Gate in Ypres, which is one of the most moving experiences in my life.

It made me reflect on the life of my uncle who died at El Alamein and all the courageous people who gave up their lives for this country.
