Appeal success, the Caversham branch of the Royal British Legion raised more than £50,000 at last year’s Poppy Appeal. The total was announced at a presentation evening at Caversham working men’s club in Church Street, where certificates were presented to the branch’s longest-serving members. Appeal organiser Pauline Palmer said, “This year the branch broke its own record, as it seems to do every year, and collected just over £51,500.“ Certificates were presented to volunteers Jack and Brenda Stanford for 25 years’ service, Chris Manning, of the ninth platoon Caversham army cadets, Kenny Hanson, who works behind the bar at the club, and John Grimes, former owner of estate agents Drummonds in Prospect Street. Branch president Ron Jewitt was presented with a badge to mark 40 years in the Royal British Legion.
