Walking workers

NINE Goring office workers raised more than £4,000 for charity by walking 52 miles in a day.

Paul Hallett, Leanne Smith, Lorna Finch, Natalie Stacey, Nikki Coleman, Sarah Beard, Tilly Penny, Donna Hancock and Claire Beasley, from Hitachi Finance in Red Cross Road, hiked the Ridgeway from Watlington to Barbury Castle in Wiltshire.

A support vehicle carrying food, spare socks and a first aid kit followed them on nearby roads.

They finished in just over 21 hours without sleeping and with only one stop for a meal at the halfway point at Bury Down.

Mr Hallett, who led the group, said: “We did lots of practice walks beforehand and quite a few people dropped out because it was tougher than they realised.

“The hardest part was between Wallingford and Goring, when the heavens opened and we all got soaked. There was no escaping from it but no one even considered giving up.

“We were pretty tired but elated when we finished and I think more than one of us had a bit of a blub.”

The proceeds went to Sense, which supports children with multiple sensory disabilities such as deaf blindness.
