BOB AUSTEN has been made honorary secretary and treasurer of the Piggott Trust in Wargrave.

Mr Austen, of Dunnock Way, replaces Russ Openshaw, who has stood down after 20 years.

The trust was founded more than 200 years ago from as a legacy left by resident Robert Piggott to provide education for the poorer children of the parish.

Now it offers grants to people from Wargrave and Crazies Hill up to the age of 25 to help pay for education or work training as well as those who want to volunteer in their gap year.

The trust also provides annual grants to the Piggott School, Robert Piggott infant and junior schools and Crazies Hill Primary School.

Mr Austen, who is chairman of Wargrave Girls’ FC, said: “Russ will be a hard act to follow but we have been friends for many years and I am sure he will be available to point me in the right direction if needed.”
