A BUSINESSMAN from Peppard will tackle a ?vicious? open water swim next week.

Nigel Downing, 64, will attempt the 16km swim across the Strait of Gibraltar from Tarifa in Spain to Tangier in Morocco.

Fewer than 500 people have attempted the challenge, which is considered among the toughest open water swims in the world.

Mr Downing, who founded business training company ProfitAbility, will arrive in Spain on Sunday but may have to wait several days for the right conditions before setting off.

He said: ?The crossing is shorter and warmer than the English Channel but it seems the currents can be vicious.?

Mr Downing is hoping to raise £5,000 for the Mission Aviation Fellowship, which helps isolated communities by air. Donations can be made at www.justgiving.com/ gibraltarswimchallenge
