Sea cadets given £1k from fireworks show

A CHEQUE for £1,000 has been presented to Henley Sea Cadets.

A CHEQUE for £1,000 has been presented to Henley Sea Cadets.

The money was raised at this year’s Henley Summer Fireworks and was presented by the committee chairman Billy Pinches at the cadets’ headquarters off Wargrave Road.

Phil Fletcher, chairman of the sea cadets, said: "It’s a very generous donation, so we’re absolutely thrilled. We’re doing an awful lot of catching up with rebuilding and maintenance and this will come in extremely handy."

Lt Cdr Andy Searles, commanding officer, said: "Without this support we wouldn’t survive. It costs a lot of money to keep a place like this running — we’re not funded by the military, we’re a charity."

The cadets helped collect money at the fireworks event at Meadows Farm Field, off Marlow Road, on the Saturday night of the royal regatta in July. They took to the river in boats and stopped along the bank to ask for donations.

Mr Pinches said: "The sea cadets have helped me from day one.

"They have shown friendship and comradeship that will help them through life."
