Aussie legend turns out for rugby dinner

AUSTRALIAN rugby world cup winner John Eales was the guest speaker at a dinner hosted by Henley Rugby Club.

AUSTRALIAN rugby world cup winner John Eales was the guest speaker at a dinner hosted by Henley Rugby Club.

About 200 people attended the event on Friday ? less than a fortnight after the Aussies dumped England out of this year?s competition.

Eales, an 6ft 7in lock who retired in 2001, was formally welcomed by former club president and captain Doug Ash and current chairman Mike Trethewey. He spoke about his career and the importance of club rugby in his development.

Beforehand, he said: ?Everyone knows rugby starts at club level and Henley seems like a great club.?

He said this year?s world cup had been ?wonderful? and he had enjoyed his country?s win over England.

Mr Trethewey said: ?It was fantastic to have a speaker like John Eales, who is an iconic rugby player. He would make it into any all-time world XV and be one of the first names on the team sheet.

?He was very personable and chatty and didn?t complain about all the selfies people took with him.?

The dinner, which also included a raffle and auction, was sponsored by Crest Nicholson.
