Valentine’s Day party ‘as good as afternoon tea at the Ritz’

A SPECIAL fund-raising tea was held in Benson to mark Valentine’s Day.

A SPECIAL fund-raising tea was held in Benson to mark Valentine’s Day.

More than 60 people paid £8 each to attend the event at the parish hall.

They were served tea, sandwiches and cakes and pastries, including a Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, choux pastry buns and scones with clotted cream and jam, all made and donated by volunteers.

As they ate, they were entertained by Roke and Benson Brass Band.

The event raised about £600 towards the refurbishment of the kitchen and toilets at the village’s Millstream Day Centre. Geraldine Gaunt, who chairs the centre’s management committee, said: “People spoke to us on the way out and they said how much they had enjoyed it.

“One lady said, ‘I’ve never been to the Ritz for afternoon tea but I’m sure it wouldn’t be better than this!’”

She said she was delighted that such a small event had raised so much, adding: “We’re looking to bring in new ideas, so the Valentine’s Day tea could be something we do for a few years.”

The centre’s next fund-raising event will be a spring fair on Saturday, April 9.
