A FREEMASONS lodge in Henley is offering a £400-a-year bursary to teenagers.

A FREEMASONS lodge in Henley is offering a £400-a-year bursary to teenagers.

Temple Island Lodge will award the bursary to one youngster to help with the cost of university or college fees or a workplace apprenticeship.

The winner will be decided by an essay competition in which candidates will be asked to write up to 500 words on “masons who made a difference.” Entries will be judged by the lodge and the Henley Standard.

Charity steward Ian Ford-Batey said: “It could be the music of Rick Wakeman, the ingenuity of Henry Ford, the films of the Warner Brothers, the medical breakthrough of Alexander Fleming or the computer technology of Steve Wozniak. It could even be someone local helping in your community”.

Temple Island, which is one of seven lodges in the town, recently celebrated its 50th anniversary and is looking to recruit younger members.

To enter, email your essay to secretary Richard Wyndham-Smith at wyndhamsmith@aol.com or post to: The Temple Island Lodge No 8031, Henley Masonic Centre, 61 Reading Road, Henley, RG9 1AE.
