Pub raises £2,000 for hospice... so far

A PUB in Sonning Common has raised more than £2,000 for Sue Ryder.

A PUB in Sonning Common has raised more than £2,000 for Sue Ryder.

Michael Sugg, 52, and his wife Claire, who run the Hare and Hounds in Woodlands Road, started collecting for the charity in November.

The Brakspear pub is one of dozens raising money after the company agreed a partnership with Sue Ryder last year to raise £50,000.

Fund-raising events included a Christmas raffle and a raffle of a rare bottle of whiskey donated by a regular which raised £175.

Mrs Sugg, 45, said: “We’ve raised money through a weekly meat draw with help from Carl Woods, who runs the butchers in Wood Lane.

“We do fortnightly pub quizzes and nine times out of 10 the winner donates the prize. We also ran a wheelchair pool competition because Ronnie Butler, one of our regulars, plays from his wheelchair so we got everyone to get on his level.”

The couple, who have run the pub since November 2014, are planning more events, including poker and pool competitions.

Mrs Sugg, who also took part in the charity’s Starlight Hike 10km walk, said: “In the summer we are thinking of having a mini-Olympics in the garden.

“When we’ve run pubs before we always raised money for Sue Ryder. They do a fantastic job and it’s local.”

Tracey Hancock, head of fund-raising at Sue Ryder, said: “We are very grateful for their support.”
