Girl, 10, gives firefighters a hand with charity car wash

A SPONSORED car wash at Goring fire station raised £275 for the Fire Fighters Charity.

A SPONSORED car wash at Goring fire station raised £275 for the Fire Fighters Charity.

Crew members from the station in Icknield Road, which hosts the event twice a year, washed about 20 cars in four hours.

The proceeds will go towards the rehabilitation of firefighters who are injured in the line of duty and supporting their families.

The next car wash will take place in September.

On-call crew manager Darren Shears, whose daughter Emily helped out, said: “We’re very grateful for the support we received from residents. The money goes to a very worthwhile cause and it’s great to be outside meeting the community and chatting with people face to face.”

The station is trying to recruit more on-call firefighters as it is understaffed and the crew must work additional shifts to make up the shortfall. It has 12 officers but ideally needs about 17. Candidates must live or work within a five-minute journey of the station and have to undergo a series of selection tests.

Those who are chosen will be paid a standby rate for being available plus an hourly rate for being called out.
