Dad wins new bicycle in prize draw

A FATHER of a pupil at Sonning Common Primary School has won the top prize in this year’s On Your Bike prize draw.

A FATHER of a pupil at Sonning Common Primary School has won the top prize in this year’s On Your Bike prize draw.

Mark Geleta won a £320 bicycle supplied by event sponsor A W Cycles, of Henley Road, Caversham, when the draw was made during a school assembly on Monday.

His daughter Emma, eight, said: “I was really excited when he won. When we told him, he was really pleased.”

Second prize of a £35 accessories voucher from A W Cycles was won by 10-year-old pupil Daniel Beech.

Daniel, who lives in Sonning Common, said he was “really surprised” to win.

This year’s 10th annual event will take place on Sunday, April 24, starting and finishing at the primary school in Grove Road. It is raising money for the school, Sue Ryder and the cardiac care unit at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

Jason Acock, who works for AW Cycles, said: “We want adults and children to be inspired by cycling. Cycling is really healthy.”

Penny Snowden, who founded the event, said: “A W Cycles have done us proud each and every year.

“Not only do they provide us with wonderful prizes but also valuable technical support and advice for riders on the day itself. We can’t thank them enough.”

Volunteers were needed to help marshal this year’s event.

Mrs Snowden, of Kennylands Road, Sonning Common, said: “The marshals play a crucial role in keeping our riders safe, so we are really keen to hear from anyone who can spare the time.

“No previous experience is necessary, as they will be fully briefed. The marshals are also given free bacon sandwiches for breakfast and a packed lunch to take with them to their marshalling positions!”

The event, which starts at 10.30am, will offer six-, 12- or 20-mile routes as well as a supervised playground cycle for little ones.

The routes use quiet roads, are marshalled at key junctions and offer halfway refreshments as well as technical, first aid and bike recovery support.

Entry is £5 beforehand or £7 on the day. The playground cycle costs £2.
