Sonning scarecrows offer some familiar faces

A RANGE of superheroes, politicians and some more unusual characters will feature in the Sonning scarecrow trail over the May bank holiday weekend.

A RANGE of superheroes, politicians and some more unusual characters will feature in the Sonning scarecrow trail over the May bank holiday weekend.

More than 60 scarecrows have been made by villagers for the eighth biennial event.

Visitors who follow the trail map will be able to see Fireman Sam, Elsa from Frozen and Batman as well as a display called “At home with the Clooneys” in honour of the village’s newest celebrity resident George Clooney and his wife Amal Alamuddin.

American presidential candidate Donald Trump will appear in a “Whack-a-Trump” attraction.

Six residents’ gardens will be open for the day and there will be a display of “cherished” cars.

The trail raises money for village amenities and has previously helped pay for a clock at Pearson Hall in Pearson Road.

Thousands of people visited the last trail in 2014.

Organiser Barbara Carr said: “The trail has got bigger and bigger since we started back in 2002 and we get thousands of people.

“The scarecrows are dotted around and you can buy a map which shows the route.

The kids love to tick them all off.” The trail will be open on Sunday and Monday, May 29 and 30 from 11am to 4.30pm.

Parking is free and refreshments will be available throughout the day.

A combined trail map and gardens ticket costs £5 (supervised children go free) and car parking is free.

Mrs Carr added: “We are hoping to have some sunny weather.”
