Deacon takes 50 parishioners along to ordination

A CHURCH deacon from Sonning Common was joined by 50 of his parishioners when he was ordained into the permanent diaconate.

Brian Theobold, 59, the deacon of St Michael’s Church, was one of six people to be ordained during a ceremony at St Chad’s Cathedral in Birmingham in front of a congregation of more than 400 people.

He was accompanied by his family, including his wife Frances, who is the organist at St Michael’s, and the parishioners on a coach to the Midlands. Some of the parishioners joined the choir during the two-hour service, which was led by the Most Rev Bernard Longley, Archbishop of Birmingham.

Mr Theobold, of Russet Close, Sonning Common, said: “The day was wonderful. The service was a very joyful occasion and it was reassuring to see so many familiar faces in the packed cathedral as both my family and parishioners travelled to share the day with me.”

Mr Theobold, who works for Johnson Matthey in Blounts Court Road, has lived in the village since 1981. He has three sons, Mark, Philip and Luke, and two grandchildren, Edward and Emelia.
