Church nears halfway in £500,000 appeal

A £500,000 appeal for a Wargrave church is approaching the halfway mark.

More than £220,000 has been raised for the renovation of St Mary’s Church in Station Road, which includes a new £350,000 annexe.

Fund-raising began in November last year and has allowed a new heating system to be installed and the font to be moved from the rear of the church to the front to allow room for a creche with soundproofed glass doors.

Appeal organiser Bob Austen said: “The main part of the appeal is the annexe. We are awaiting approval by English Heritage of the design before we can go to Wokingham Borough Council for planning permission. We hope it will all be done by the end of the year.”

The next fund-raising event will be a concert at the church on Saturday, November 15 at 7.30pm.
