ROBERT Downey Jr swaps the Iron Man suit for a fresh lawyer’s one in new family courtroom drama, The Judge.
Downey Jnr plays Hank Palmer, a hotshot defence attorney with a knack of getting criminals off charges and accepting the vitriol aimed at him by not just the public but also his colleagues.
Things take a tragic turn during his latest case when his mother passes away. Taking a leave of court, he journeys back to his home town in rural America to say his goodbyes and, much to his frustration, meet his father Joseph (played by Robert Duvall) who also happens to be the prestigious county judge. Despite Palmer’s best attempts to avoid communicating with his estranged father, he finds himself defending the judge after his father is accused of murder.
With an overzealous district attorney (Billy Bob Thornton) eager to throw in the death penalty, Palmer must discover the truth behind the crime and re-connect with his estranged family.
The Judge is a radical departure for director David Dobkin whose credits mostly consist of over-the-top comedies such as Wedding Crashers, The Change-Up and Fred Claus. The film switches between the drama playing out in the courtroom and that playing out in the family home.
