Open air cinema success

THE first weekend of this year’s Regal by the River outdoor cinema event in Henley has been hailed a success despite the cancellation of its Friday screening.

Iain Boulton, duty manager at the Regal Picturehouse in Boroma Way, said there were a “few technical glitches” with the sound at the planned screening of The Great Gatsby in Mill Meadows.

Customers were offered a refund or given the chance to attend another screening.

The Great Gatsby, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, was shown on Sunday instead after organisers took the decision not to show Singin’ in the Rain which underperformed in sales, selling around 10 tickets, said Mr Boulton. He added: “We made the decision to change it because there was a higher demand for The Great Gatsby on the Friday.”

Around 50 people attended the screening on Sunday night but Saturday was the most popular evening with 250 tickets sold for Eighties cult classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.

It’s the second year the event has been staged and Mr Boulton said: “We’re giving movies to the town and trying to be part of the community. Doing outdoor events like this is quite good and hopefully every time we put it on people get a nice experience out of it. Hopefully next weekend we should see high audiences again.”

A raffle was held, with two tickets up for grabs for the Sunday at the Rewind Festival in Henley. The weekend, which was held in partnership with Peroni Nastro Azzurro Piccola, also featured a bar as well as food by Facing Heaven.

Films being shown this weekend include The Grand Budapest Hotel today (Friday), where 150 tickets have been sold, Grease tomorrow (Saturday), where around 120 have been bought, and Casablanca on Sunday, which has seen more than 60 tickets already snapped up.

Doors open at 7pm and the films start at 9.15pm or at dusk.

Tickets are £10 full price, £8.50 members and concessions. They can be booked in person at the Regal Picturehouse, online at www.picturehouses.co.uk or via the phone line on 0871 902 5738 (calls cost 10p per minute from a BT landline).
