Spotlight shone on US whistle-blower

AN insight into the events which led to Edward Snowden’s whistle-blowing revelations on US intelligence agencies’ surveillance will be screened at the Regal Picturehouse in Henley.

Citizen Four, by filmmaker Laura Poitras, will be shown as part of the 58th London Film Festival and a live question-and-answer broadcast will follow it.

Poitras was several years into a project about abuses of national security in a post-911 US when she was mysteriously contacted by someone calling themselves citizen four. Poitras and reporter Glenn Greenwald flew to Hong Kong some months later to meet citizen four, a man who claimed he was ready to blow the whistle on massiver covert operations run by the US. That man was Edward Snowden.

Poitras filmed their meetings over a series of tense encounters and in doing so documented a moment of history as Snowden’s release of classified documents brought government secrecy and surveillance under the spotlight.

The film will be screened tonight, Friday, at 8pm. Box office 08719 025738.
