A SCREENING of the latest in the I, Superbiker documentary series takes place at the Regal Picturehouse on Monday — and fans will also have the chance to meet the director as well as the 2012 champion, Shane Byrne.
Directed by Mark Sloper, I Superbiker: The Day Of Reckoning focuses on the end-of-season contest between the top riders in the 2012 British Superbike Championship.
Six riders were competing for the title: West Country underdog Tommy Bridewell, Australian bad boy Josh Brookes, crowd favourite Shane “Shakey” Byrne, doggedly determined Irishman Michael Laverty, youthful newcomer Alex Lowes and reigning BSB champion Tommy Hill, who won the 2011 title by just 1/60th of a second.
Narrated by Formula One commentator, Murray Walker OBE, the documentary shows footage of the action, as well as peeking behind the scenes. It is here that we find out details about the competitors’ private lives, and what drives them. Mechanic Tommy Bridewell, for example, is motivated by the memory of his brother Ollie, who was killed while practising for the competition five years ago.
Writer, producer and director Mark Sloper said: “I wanted to capture the emotion and passion of motorcycle racing and the drama of the showdown format.
“This is a classic motorcycle racing film, set in the 2012 season, but a timeless story that will stay fresh for years to come. I also wanted it to appeal to people outside the motorcycle industry and the fan-base, and I truly believe it will change outsiders’ perceptions of motorcycling.”
The two previous films in this documentary series were confined to DVD release only, but this third installment is currently touring UK cinemas after its première in London.
le_SHrSI, Superbiker: The Day Of Reckoning shows at the Regal Picturehouse on Monday, April 8 at 6.30pm. Director Mark Sloper, champion Shane Byrne and his girlfriend Petra will be around before and after the show to chat to fans and sign autographs.
