New humour in an old Disney fairytale

A LIVE action take on the classic Disney story, this Cinderella is for those who like

A LIVE action take on the classic Disney story, this Cinderella is for those who like a fairytale in which men are men and women are all aspiring princesses.

It’s not progressive but it is well told and beautifully presented.

Kenneth Branagh keeps the story trotting along and his sense of humour comes through in his acknowledgement of some absurd situations. Holliday Grainger and Sophie McShera are wonderfully despicable as the cruel stepsisters and Helena Bonham Carter plays the Fairy Godmother with sparkling lightness.

Cate Blanchett is the big noise as the conniving stepmother who never misses a trick to be nasty to poor Ella (Lily James). Richard Madden is the handsome Prince who displays his sensitive side in a surprising scene where he is curled up crying next to his dead father.

It’s an old, old story but retold with new technology and what it lacks in depth it makes up for in humour and is brilliantly played.
