THERE was a good attendance at the June meeting, where the acting chairman Gwen Wilding welcomed members and a guest.

There being no other business, the speaker Elizabeth Hazeldine was introduced and she gave us a most interesting talk entitled “Henley heritage, exploring Henley and its people”.

Elizabeth had researched her subject in depth and we were taken back to the 1400s when Henley began to become important through its trading with London via the River Thames.

She covered Henley history during the plague and the Civil War and told how boys educated in the poor house went on to become architects and builders, constructing many of the roads and houses that are so familiar to us today.

This was a riveting talk given without notes. There is very little about Henley that Elizabeth has not researched. Her book was on sale afterwards and can be bought in the Bell Bookshop for £14.99.

The next meeting will take place on Thursday, July 14 when the speaker will be Nick Brazil talking about “A journey with ghosts”. For information about the club, please call Marion Whitaker on (01491) 628629 or email her at pandmwhit@ btinternet.com
