Enthusiasts back in the saddle at cycle rally

ALMOST 200 riders took part in the 56th annual Benson veteran cycle rally.

ALMOST 200 riders took part in the 56th annual Benson veteran cycle rally.

Visitors gathered on their pre-1928 machines in the Sunnyside playing field before setting off on a 13-mile route earlier this month.

Riders passed through Benson Aerodrome for a mid-morning stop at Tithe Barn, in Ewelme.

They then rode on to Chalgrove and after lunch followed a circular route back through Berrick Salome and Roke.

Chairman Michael Coleman, 74, from Abingdon, said: “It was a very event and a good turnout.

“Everybody seemed to enjoy it and it all went off without any accidents. There were a few hiccups but all in all it went very well.

“We have people from all over the country — they come down from Grimsby, Suffolk and up from Devon and Dorset.

“I think it’s the welcoming nature and the atmosphere. We get a lot of cyclists following on modern bikes from London and various places. I hope it continues for many years.”

Thirty-five people also entered on the day.
