England under-21s manager, Gareth Southgate spent a day with personnel from RAF Benson giving leadership talks and coaching sessions. He visited the station as part of a programme designed to encourage the development of leadership skills among the ranks and trades. He met with aircrew and discussed the RAF’s training methods for performing under pressure and how they could translate to the elite sports environment. Southgate also spoke in the officers’ mess to an audience of senior non-commissioned and commissioned officers. He also held a short training session with nine and 10-year-olds from Benson Lions Football Club. The visit was organised by the station’s force development squadron, which is responsible for all training and education of service personnel. Wg Cdr Chris Skaife said: “Gareth Southgate’s visit proved extremely beneficial in inspiring current and future leaders. We are extremely grateful for the time he gave.”
