Boat club may disband if new HQ plans are refused

GORING Gap Boat Club says it might have to disband if it does not obtain permission for a permanent new home.

West Berkshire Council will decide on Wednesday whether to approve a planning application for a £350,000 boathouse on the southern bank of the Thames just outside the village.

Chairman Hugh Baker-Smith said this could determine the future of the club, which organises the Goring and Streatley Regatta.

He said councillors would have to balance the fact that the site is in the Chilterns Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with the club’s long search for a suitable site.

Mr Baker-Smith said: “It’s finely poised but it’s absolutely crucial for our club as we have needed a permanent home for over 20 years. It is a struggle to find anywhere on the Thames and we have worked very hard to find a suitable site. We have spent almost £30,000 on this application because this is probably our last chance. I just hope we can convince the planning committee that improving access to the area outweighs the cost of building on it.
