Village set to replace aged cricket pavilion

THE cricket pavilion on Whitchurch village green is set to be replaced at a cost of £150,000.

The parish council, which owns the land, says the existing building is no longer fit for purpose. It does not have disabled toilets or changing rooms and the roof leaks. It is also no longer big enough to accommodate the growing number of youth cricket teams.

The council wants to replace it with a larger, more modern facility with a tea room, showers and disabled access. The new pavilion could also be used by football clubs and other sports and community groups.

No firm plans have been drawn up but the council is holding a public meeting on Thursday to hear the views of residents. It will use the feedback to draw up a detailed proposal and then submit a planning application to South Oxfordshire District Council.

If this is successful it will apply for grants from the district council and Sport England before appointing a contractor. If all goes to plan, the new pavilion could be in place by the end of next year.
