Widow takes over as club president

THE widow of the late Peter Sutherland has succeeded him as the president of Upper Thames Rowing Club in Henley.

THE widow of the late Peter Sutherland has succeeded him as the president of Upper Thames Rowing Club in Henley.

Diane Sutherland, who co-founded the club with her husband in 1963, was elected unanimously.

She said: “It is a great honour to become president of Upper Thames. The club is very close to my heart and I can’t believe it has been 50 years since we started.

“We used to keep the boats in our living room in New Street with the garden doors open in the winter, which meant we had to live on the first floor.

“Thankfully, Upper Thames now has wonderful facilities that mean I can live in warmth these days.”

Club chairman Jon Thornber said: “Diane was the obvious choice for president, having founded the club with Peter.

“Her experience of witnessing the club’s development over half a century will be invaluable and I’m sure she will make a great president.”

Paul Stuart Bennett and Mrs Sutherland’s son Justin were elected as trustees.

Mr Sutherland, a former GB coach, died in November, aged 87.
