Twinning group plans events to lure young

More events are to be held by the Henley Leichlingen Twinning Association in an attempt to increase membership numbers.

Monthly knitting and drinking evenings and regular film screenings are planned.

Patrick Fleming, the association’s chairman, said: “Twinning for us for the last few years has really concentrated on two activities- the civic visit and the music exchange.

“It’s going to be radically different this year as we are filling the year with dates. Most of the events will still work even if there’s only three or four or five of you - and if we get more than all the better.

“I am aware that in order to engage younger people we have got to be relevant. Having an event once a year is not enough and we need to keep the interest throughout the year.”

People attending the monthly events will be encouraged to speak German.

Mr Fleming said: “I don’t get a chance to speak German as much as I would like but this will give us all a chance to practise. There are a number of German-speakers living in Henley and if we could get them along to help us that would be great.

“We want to find those people who want to find out about Germay or are interested in languages. We need to get the word out there and get people interested and involved.”

The first Deutscher Trinkkreis will be held next friday (February 22) and the knitting circle will meet from March 12.
