Volunteers needed for street-cleaning day

A STREET-CLEANING day will be held in Watlington on Sunday.

A STREET-CLEANING day will be held in Watlington on Sunday.

Watlington in Bloom has organised the event which will primarily involve cleaning street signs.

People who wish to take part are asked to meet at the parish office at 2pm.

The town will compete in this year’s national finals of the Britain in Bloom competition after achieving a gold award in the large village category last year.

Terry Jackson, group co-ordinator, said: “We are varying it a bit more this year and we will be holding several tidy-up days with different aims, like painting and weeding.”

The group is also introducing several initiatives to boost its chances. Groups of residents will be able to adopt an area such as an alleyway or an open space as part of the Royal Horticultural Society’s It’s Your Neighbourhood Group and a path-clearing team will weed paths and alleys around the town.

Mrs Jackson said: “We have a neighbour group in Mansle Gardens which has already done some planting to fill in the gaps in the hedges.”

Other plans ahead of the regional judges’ visit in July and the national judges’ visit in August include planting community herb gardens and commissioning a stone sculpture by a local artist.

More volunteers are needed for Watlington in Bloom’s open gardens day, planned for June 30. Residents who are willing to open their gardens should call Mrs Jackson on (01491) 613362.
