SIR JOHN MADEJSKI will be guest of honour at a special celebration for Reading’s Probus clubs on May 20.

The occasion will mark 45 years in the life of Reading & District Probus Club and 20 years in that of Reading East Probus Club.

Together, the two clubs have enriched the post-retirement years of many former professionals and businessmen living in the wider community.

The inspiration for Probus as a national network goes back to 1965 when the idea of establishing clubs intended to meet the social and intellectual needs of retired professionals was brought to fruition.

The springboard for this idea was to cater for the vacuum in activity which sometimes confronted former managers whose work involved the daily dynamics of business.

The principle was not to submit to inactivity and the motto was “Don’t degenerate regenerate!”

From these modest beginnings, Probus has grown into what is now an international network.

Any enterprise which brings groups of like-minded people together in shared enterprise and comradeship is to be welcomed.

That is the spirit which underlines the anniversary to be celebrated on May 20 with a lunch at Sonning Golf Club.

Members will honour the commitment made by the founders of the two Reading clubs and the spirit of co-operation and shared ideals which they inspired.

The focus is as much on the future as on history and, in that spirit, the clubs welcome expressions of interest from potential new members.

All organisations need to provide scope and opportunity for fresh commitment and new initiatives. Probus is no exception and the joint anniversary is an opportunity to reinforce that principle.
