THERE was a surprise for Henley Rotary Club’s honorary member Ken Fitt when he and his wife Gloria attended a meeting with partners at Henley Golf Club.

President Roger Sayer explained that the Paul Harris Fellowship, named after the Rotary movement’s founder, is awarded from time to time in recognition of exceptional service to the community, over and above a conscientious Rotarian’s normal contribution.

He said Mr Fitt had demonstrated service above self, not only to Rotary but also to many charities in the area, and had enthusiastically participated in anything he was asked to do.

He had chaired the adjudicating panel at the local heat of Youth Speaks, Rotary’s public speaking competition, since the mid-Nineties.

He had provided music for the annual president’s night for many years and been responsible for playing in and engaging other musicians for all the Rotary jazz club concerts since they began in 2009. This year, he also sold 70 tickets for the function.

Mr Fitt thanked the assembled company and said he was proud to have been re-elected an honorary member of the club every year since 2005.
