WE have six new drivers, Jane Case, Linda Haines, Susan Mickelwright, Pauline Peachey, John Read and Louise Webb. A warm welcome to them all. However, we still need more volunteers.

As discussed at last year’s annual meeting, we are gradually adopting the working title of Henley Volunteer Drivers, which better describes what we actually do. Henley Good Neighbours has taken on the things we once did, befriending and visiting the elderly, while we focus on community transport.

Our official name remains Henley Volunteer Bureau but “Henley Volunteer Drivers” has been registered with the Charity Commission as a working title.

George Leslie has been asked again to arrange transport for the Mayor’s Christmas party for senior citizens on Tuesday, December 3.

Oxfordshire Dial-a-Ride is a little known but potentially valuable door-to-door transport service run by Oxfordshire County Council for people who are unable to use, or do not have access to, public transport. The service is not available for hospital appointments but can be used for shopping, or visits to the dentist, chiropodist, hairdresser etc. and for visiting friends.

It is available on Wednesdays and Fridays in South Oxfordshire and journeys must be within the county boundary. There is annual registration charge of £5 but people with a bus pass travel free. We understand it’s under-used in the Henley area. For more information, call 0845 310 1111 or visit www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/dialaride

The collection at Tesco on June 28 and 29 raised £523 and the one in Market Place/Bell Street on September 6, a very wet, cold day, raised £327. These proceeds will underpin our finances for the year. Many thanks to all who helped and to Mike Hollas for organising them.

Our annual meeting will take place in the town hall on November 20 at 11am. Coffee and tea will be available afterwards. For more information, call (01491) 572923 (10.15am to noon, Monday to Friday).
