Gardening course students thrive on tips

A NEW gardening course has started in Henley.

A NEW gardening course has started in Henley.

The first session of Sow and Grow was held at the d:two centre in Market Place where participants were taught the basics of repotting flowering plants.

The course is run by Thrive, a gardening charity, as part of the National Lottery’s reaching communities programme and is aimed at the over-50s.

Niamh Kendall, a Thrive outreach officer who leads the course, said: “We cover a theme every week and we have lots planned. The people here told me they were complete novices. They wanted to know what to plant when and how to make it grow.

“We have a plan over the eight weeks of the course and then if they enjoy it we will look at getting them into a gardening group.”

The course topics include sowing seeds, planting vegetables, propagation and hanging baskets as well as healthy eating. Mrs Kendall said: “The course also provides a good social event for people.”

A Thrive course will begin in Sonning Common in September.
