EIGHT vintage Lotus cars took part in a rally from Sonning Eye on Sunday.

The sports cars, which included a 1966 Elan, gathered in the garden of the Great House at Sonning Hotel before being driven to Basildon Park, a National Trust property near Pangbourne, via Sonning Common, Stoke Row and Goring.

The rally involved members of the Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire branch of Club Lotus, an owners’ club.

Organiser John Woodhouse, who drove the white Elan, said: “We had a most enjoyable day.

“It was an excellent drive. We passed through some lovely bluebell woods and had nice views of the Thames Valley. We had a lot of waves from people as we drove past.

“After a scenic drive, we were joined by a ninth car on the lawns facing the house at Basildon Park.

“We were made very welcome and the cars attracted a lot of interest from other visitors.

“As the rest of the country was celebrating the 70th anniversary of VE Day we managed to display red, white and blue Lotus Elans together!”

David McLeod, of Club Lotus, said it was a tribute to the lightweight design of the Lotus that the cars were still running 50 years after they were manufactured.
