THE chairman welcomed members and guests to our meeting at Badgemore Golf Club on Thursday, July 9.
After the minutes of the June meeting were read, the chairman introduced the speaker David Grubb, whose talk was entitled “Ways of writing about exceptional events in your life“.
His key message was “if you don‘t tell your story, who will and how?“
He suggested writing about what had happened in your life, which you might otherwise forget.
Maybe just a note in a diary, which you thought was insignificant at the time, turns out to be quite an exciting and memorable event later.
He suggested we could refresh our memories of the past with old diaries, school reports (not many of those around), talking to families and friends and revisiting old haunts.
We were shown books by people who had written in this way and to us it was a novel, a story book, but to the writer it could well have been their life story.
In the past most authors had to make notes on paper which probably got lost in a folder somewhere but we all have memories, good or bad, and with present-day technology we have the advantage of the computer to help us store memories of  our past, way back into our childhood.
One lucky memory can go on to remind us of something else or someone who may be able to help. Our descendants may, if not now, be interested to read our story eventually and may even be spurred on to write a book on it.
The next meeting will be on August 13 and the speaker will be Judy Dewey on “The history of Wallingford Castle and surrounds“.
