Farewell to Kenton's faded foyer

VOLUNTEERS at the Kenton Theatre in Henley bade a quiet farewell to the faded foyer.

VOLUNTEERS at the Kenton Theatre in Henley bade a quiet farewell to the faded foyer.

The New Street venue is now closed for two months so the front of house area can be refurbished. It will re-open on September 11.

As part of the makeover, the box office will be moved and the bar extended.

Ed Simons, who chairs the Kenton trustees, says the days of box office staff having to shout to make themselves heard will be over. ?The foyer was in somewhat of a time warp,? he says.

?Once I saw a box office manager having to shout at the whole foyer when she couldn?t hear herself think.

?Suddenly there was this booming voice and the customers all went quiet as they stopped talking.?

Ed says no one knows for sure the last time the foyer was refurbished but it was either 50 or 60 years ago. ?It was of its time and the trustees and I thought the foyer needed to be looked at. The theatre is so beautiful, the foyer needed to reflect that as the audiences see it when they walk through the doors.?

Ed won?t reveal the cost of the work but says: ?People have been enormously generous towards the Kenton over the last few years and I think everyone will be delighted with what they see when the new foyer is finished.?
