OUR guest speaker for the September meeting was David Grubb, one-time headmaster of Gillotts School, and his subject was “The art of self-publishing”.
David started by saying that each of us is an individual and the lives we have led are among the many topics which self publishers choose.
Your first thought must be to identify who you are writing the book for, who is your audience.
From several examples, there was a woman describing what her life had been like and it was addressed to her children and grandchildren so that they would have something by which to remember her.
There was also a woman’s description of her life before, during and after her time in the army.
Several dos and don’ts were covered, such as to be aware of internet companies who may be out to swindle you. Make sure you have your work proof-read and properly edited.
David pointed out that there is plenty of help out there via magazines and the internet.
In the end, while you may be satisfied with the result of your writing, you may well be out of pocket.
