Hawks appeal on target

AN appeal to raise £175,000 to renovate the clubhouse at Henley Rugby Club has nearly reached its target.

AN appeal to raise £175,000 to renovate the clubhouse at Henley Rugby Club has nearly reached its target.

Club chairman Mike Trethewey said the appeal had broken the £120,000 mark and more donations were expected.

An auction with lots including tickets to see Elton John at the Henley Festival and home cooking by a professional chef raised £3,500 and there have been donations from local groups including Henley Round Table.

The club needs to raise a total of £475,000 and has already received pledges of £300,000 in grants and loans by South Oxfordshire District Council and Henley Town Council.

Mr Trethewey said: “We are getting on extremely well. We have now raised about £120,000 but we also know of people who have pledged more money. When that comes in we will be very close, not quite there but within touching distance.

“People have been very generous and I’m as confident as I can be that we will get there.”

The refurbished clubhouse will include new toilets, a kitchen and bar as well as seating space for 200 diners.
