Henley Lions Club

WE would like to wish the people of Henley and the surrounding district a happy New Year.

WE would like to wish the people of Henley and the surrounding district a happy New Year.

We finished our charity events with Santa’s grotto at Toad Hall garden centre where we were able to arrange for Santa to visit for four weekends before the big day.

A record 856 children were able to visit the grotto, talk to Santa and receive a small early Christmas gift from him.

The proceeds from this event always go to children’s charities and this year these are the Chiltern Centre for disabled children in Henley and the Footsteps Children’s Foundation in Dorchester.

Our thanks go to Toad Hall who sponsored this event again, to general manager Martyn Sheldrake and assistant Lynn Burgess for building the grotto and to all the staff for their support during the four weeks of Santa’s visits.

Throughout 2015, we made 26 major charity donations, ranging from £100 to £1,500 plus the Christmas parcels that were delivered locally to those less fortunate than ourselves.

We know how much these are appreciated as the thank-you messages are still arriving and we were so pleased to have been able to make a  difference.

Grateful acknowledgement to the YMCA for allowing us the use of its premises to sort and pack the parcels.

Although the majority of our funds are spent locally, donations were also made to the UNICEF children’s refuge and its “winterisation” programme for children and to the Nepal earthquake  disaster. We also send our thanks to Copas for donating the 20 turkeys that we were able to distribute to be used for Christmas festivities at the Henley Over-60s Club and the many clubs at the Christ Church Centre.

A great community spirit is fostered among these very varied groups of local  residents.

Our other activities have included supplying items such as white goods, carpeting and other smaller necessities within our local area.

If you are considering giving a small amount of your time as a local volunteer, you are most welcome to come along to a Lions meeting, which are normally held on the first Monday of the month at 7.45pm in the Margaret Day Room at King’s Arms Barn in Henley.

We are a friendly and fun group of people and would love to meet you.
