THE guides have received a £750 donation after winning a special community initiative run by housebuilder Persimmon Homes.
They will use the money to buy new tents for their annual week-long summer camping trips. Heather O’Halloran, who has led the group for 30 years, said: “The donation is fantastic news for us.
“We do the camping trips to different destinations each year during the first week of the summer holidays and this year’s is to Ruislip in Middlesex. We raised around £800 ourselves through selling marmalade and home-made cards, a quiz evening and a sponsored silence.
“We are hugely appreciative of Persimmon’s donation as it means the girls can continue with the camping trips they enjoy so much.”
Persimmon Homes Thames Valley’s Community Champions scheme makes a contribution to a charity within the community each month, donating a total of £24,000 over a year.
Rachel Faulkner, head of sales, said: “Caversham Park Guides do some fantastic work in their community and we are thrilled that this contribution will allow their camping trips to continue.
“We had a fantastic response to the Community Champions scheme and it is always a tricky task to pick our winners each month.
“If applicants were unsuccessful last month, we urge them to visit the Persimmon Homes website and to try again.”
Caversham Park Guides meet at the Methodist church hall in Gosbrook Road and have about 30 members, aged 10 and 15.
Groups and charities which have raised funds themselves can apply for match funding of up to £1,000 from Community Champions at www.persimmonhomes.com/Â charity
