Henley U3A

WE are a small but thriving group with more than 150 members but would welcome more people from lower age groups.

We offer, for example, how to learn French or landscape painting or to write a poem, trips to concerts, weekend walking trips and book groups.

Our next meeting will be on March 9 at 2pm when John Ambrose will speak on the subject of “tax, care and toy boys”, a humorous guide to the new tax rules on inheritance, care costs and remarriage that will apply from April.

The annual meeting will take place on April 13 at 1.45pm for 2pm.

All meeting take place at the YMCA hall in Noble Road, Henley. The cost is £1 for members and £2 for non-members of retirement age.

The monthly lunches have been discontinued due to lack of support. For more information about Henley U3A, visit http://u3asites.org.uk and click on “H” and then scroll down to Henley.

Charles Whittaker has recently taken over as  chairman.

Sadly, John Hutton, who was our chairman from April 2002 to March 2011, died on February 8 in hospital following a heart attack.

His wife Rosemary served as membership secretary.

John was an economist who taught at Henley Management College and overseas, including universities in Australia and Uganda.

He was very well read and knowledgeable. He leaves a son and two daughters.

• A full obituary for Mr Hutton will be published in next week’s Henley Standard.
