KING Harald V of Norway has become an honorary member of Leander Club in Henley.

He first learned to row at Balliol College, Oxford, in the early Sixties — just like his father King Olav V, whom he succeeded in 1991.

Older members of Leander may remember the old king was a guest speaker at the club 30 years ago.

Incidentally, Harald was taught to row by his fellow university student and friend Nick Bevan, who rowed for Oxford in the 1963 Boat Race and went on to become a leading British schools rowing coach and headmaster of Shiplake College.
