AT the meeting on April 26 the club was very pleased to welcome Charlotte Geeves, chief executive of the Henley Festival, as its guest speaker.
Members heard that Charlotte joined the festival some 18 months ago after a varied and interesting management career with organisations such as the Young Vic, the Shakespeare Globe Theatre, Sadler’s Wells Company, the Salisbury Arts Festival and the Bristol Film Festival.
She described how, after a poorly supported festival in 2014, the event was overwhelmed by the demand for tickets in 2015 and said much had been learned by the management from the experience.
Charlotte gave an appetising insight into this year’s festival, emphasising the varied programme.
She described how the management was seeking to make greater use of a mixture of national and local talent and to use local suppliers.
Members were interested to hear that although the festival is a commercial venture, all profits are distributed to charities. Past recipients have included Camp Mohawk, Headway, Nomad and, through the Children’s Society, Young Children Carers.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Peter Thomson and received with acclaim by the members present.
