Helping children to read

TWO members of a charity which helps children to read spoke at this week’s meeting on Henley Rotary Club.

Elaine Adams and Jane Rendle helped found ARCh (Assisted Reading for Children in Oxfordshire) in 2008.

The Bicester-based charity now has six full-time staff, including three field workers, and 240 volunteers working in 100 schools in the county. The oldest volunteer is 87.

The women handed out two leaflets where a paragraph was printed as a mirror image and challenged members of their audience to read out what it said.

Several struggled to work it out and this emphasised how backward readers find it difficult to understand what they see.
