Thousands without power in Valentine’s night gales

MORE than 12,500 homes in the Henley area were without power at the weekend follow gales which damaged dozens of trees.

The blackouts began on Friday night, when there were winds of up to 70mph, and in some cases power was not restored until Sunday.

Southern Electric said the conditions caused disruption to the network by bringing down power lines that serve homes in the RG postcode.

Hundreds of homes were without water at times over the weekend due to pumping stations losing power.

Oxfordshire County Council said it dealt with more than 140 trees and branches during Friday night alone.
