A SOCIAL club for older people in Russell’s Water held its final meeting — 50 years to the day after it began.
Silver Threads met for the last time on Thursday last week when the remaining 11 members turned out for a game of bingo and cake.
The club has been held once a month since 1964 at the village hall. At its peak, it had more than 60 members who went on outings to seaside resorts.
Dorothy Ackerman, whose parents Frank and Mabel Shurey were founding members, has been a member since the Eighties and has run the club for the last six years.
Mrs Ackerman, 87, of Church Street, Watlington, said: “We are closing because age has finally defeated us.
