War memorials fund hits £3,200 target

AN appeal to raise money for three new war memorials for Henley’s “forgotten” servicemen has reached its initial target.

The Lest We Forget project has received the £3,200 it requires to get an £8,200 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The money will fund the memorials in the town hall and at Holy Trinity Church and St Mary’s Church in time to commemorate the centenary of the beginning of the First World War on August 4.

The three plaques will feature the names of about 300 men, of whom about a third have not been commemorated previously.

It is hoped that Tim Stevenson, the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire, will unveil the town hall memorial at a service on August 3.
