Sixty-five volunteers come forward to help run library

SIXTY-FIVE people have volunteered to help out at Sonning Common library.

The library appealed for help in response to cuts in its staff budget to be made by Oxfordshire County Council.

Fifty people attended a public meeting organised by the Friends of Sonning Common Library on Thursday last week and another 15 who were unable to attend have since contacted the Grove Road library to express their interest.

Ros Varnes, chairman of the Friends, said: “This is recognition of the special status the library has in the village. It was clear from the strength of feeling that the library is considered to be a vital and valued part of the community.”

James Hazlewood, community libraries co-ordinator for the county council, added: “It was a pleasure to meet so many positive people.
