President to promote farming

THE new president of Henley and District Agricultural Association has pledged to raise the profile of farming.

Lady Phillimore, who succeeds Rick White, said: “Because of the historical efficiency of English farming relatively few people are involved in farming today, so the voice of the farming community is too often ignored.

“I hope in my year to give it a higher profile, whether it is to talk about the serious difficulties the exceptional wet weather this winter has caused, or the burden that the three crop rotation will add to smaller farms, or how logical it is to explore the introduction of GM crops in a world which increases faster than our capacity to feed it.”

She hoped to help the association’s “wonderful” team which “year after year gives so much of their time and energy to this great organisation”.

Lady Phillimore said that when she moved to England 43 years ago she did not expect to be so involved in farming.
