Spitfire fly-past to mark 75th anniversary of base

A SPITFIRE will perform a fly-past as part of RAF Benson’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

The fighter aircraft, which was based at the station in 1944, will appear overhead at around 1.50pm on Sunday, May 4.

The base was opened in 1939 and during the Second World War was the main operational station for the photographic reconnaissance squadrons.

Plans to mark the anniversary were revealed by Squadron Leader Mike Greene at a meeting of Benson Parish Council last week.

He said the RAF wanted to thank the local community. On May 4 personnel from the base will march through Benson to St Helen’s Church accompanied by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force.
