Founder of Choral Society honoured

THE founder of Henley Choral Society has been honoured with a town medal.

Wendy Hawkins was given her accolade by Mayor Stefan Gawrysiak at the town hall last night (Monday, April 7).

About 40 people were present at the ceremony including her husband Andrew and children Alison and Jonathan.

The 68-year-old, of Berkshire Road, started the society with her first husband Graham Gooder in 1973.

She has also conducted the Henley Carol Singers for the past 20 years and has been organist at Stoke Row Independent Chapel since moving to the area in 1972.

Mrs Hawkins said: "I'm very pleased for everybody who has come and sung for me. It is one thing being a conductor or organiser but you need people behind you who are willing to take part."

Cllr Gawrysiak also gave lapel badges to Erin Bradley and Lauren Hunt, both 15 and of Trust Corner in Henley, to mark the end of their year as Mayor's cadets.

A full story will appear in this week's Henley Standard.
